Builders' groups welcome new licencing regime

Builders are welcoming the introduction of a licencing regime, saying it is long overdue and will flush out rogue operators.

From March, most residential building work requiring a building consent must be carried out by Licensed Building Practitioners.

The Department of Building and Housing's campaign is aimed at improving the quality of workmanship and helping ensure there is no repeat of the leaky homes crisis.

The Certified Builders Association says 10,000 builders already have the licence.

Registered Master Builders says anyone who can't achieve the licence shouldn't be in the building industry.

The managing director of Stonewood Homes in Christchurch, Brent Mettrick, says the introduction of the new regime will mean homeowners can be sure no fly-by-nights will be coming in to do a quick job on rebuilding quake-hit houses.
