One dead, three critical after Cromwell crash

One person has died three people are in a critical condition following a car crash in Cromwell.

Police say a sedan collided with a light van at the intersection of State Highway 6 and State Highway 8B, the turn-off to Queenstown and Wanaka, about 5.45pm on Thursday.

The driver of the sedan, a 29-year-old man who worked in the Cromwell area, died at the scene.

Four other occupants of the car were injured. Three have been flown to Dunedin Hospital and were in a critical condition on Thursday night.

Another person with moderate injuries was taken to Dunstan Hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the van has minor injuries.
