Teen driver admits part in fatal street race crash

A teenager who police say was driving a car that hit another vehicle, killing its driver during a street race has admitted his involvement.

Shaun Fitzpatrick, 22, was killed at the weekend when his car was hit by one of two racing vehicles that ran a red light during a street race.

A 15-year-old boy charged with dangerous driving causing death appeared in the Auckland Youth Court on Thursday.

His lawyer told the court the teenager does not deny the charge.

The hearing has, however, been put off until next week so police can consider whether to charge the teenager with a more serious crime instead.

He is facing three lesser charges, which he is also not denying, including driving while forbidden and getting into a stolen car.

He has been remanded in secure Child, Youth and Family care.

Two 17-year-olds are also charged in relation to the crash.
