Quakes felt all over the country

6:00 pm on 6 January 2012

Earthquakes measuring magnitude 5.1 and 4.1 were recorded in East Coast and Taranaki on Friday afternoon - but unlike the continuing earthquakes in Canterbury the two in the North Island were deep underground.

GNS Science says the East Coast earthquake was centred 170km east of Ruatoria - and was 33km deep. It measured 5.1 and happened at 5.10pm.

The earthquake in Taranaki was centred 10km west of Hawera. It measured 4.1 and was 30km deep.

Canterbury had three earthquakes on Friday afternoon ranging from magnitude 3.2 to 5.1.

All have been less than 11km deep and centred east or north-east of Christchurch city.
