Police are to begin trialing the use of smartphones, laptops and computer tablets on the beat.
The trial is part of a programme aimed at improving the technology available to frontline staff.
It will involve about 100 officers throughout the Hawke's Bay, Lower Hutt, West Coast and Counties-Manukau districts.
Police Association vice-president Stuart Mills says the technology will considerably improve frontline staff efficiency.
"Police have been using the smart technology, secure mobile access and reporting technology ... for the last six months, and it's been very successful.
"The use of smart techology improves the accuracy of the data being inputted by the officers and also increases the efficiency and time spent when dealing with members of the public."
The trial begins on 30 January.
