Quitline prepared for busy New Year

1:17 pm on 26 December 2011

The national quit smoking line is expecting a high number of calls in the New Year from smokers trying to kick the habit as the price of cigarettes goes up.

Quitline chief executive Paula Snowden says the service has already been busy taking calls from people worried about the tobacco tax increase that takes effect from 1 January.

She says January is usually the busiest time of the year as people make New Year's resolutions to stop smoking.

Ms Snowdon says 1 January won't be a holiday for Quitline and a full complement of staff will be rostered on.
