Former Housing New Zealand residents of a Lower Hutt suburb have left the site they have been occupying for the past 20 days in protest at a new housing development.
Eighty-eight state houses in Pomare are being knocked down and will be replaced with a mix of Housing New Zealand and private housing.
The protesters, who averaged about 15 a night at the Farmer Crescent campsite, want Housing New Zealand to give them the opportunity to come back to the new development.
A spokesperson for the Pomare Save Our Community group, Dina Awarau, says the department has met them and agreed to work through their concerns.
