The family of a teenager who died in a jet ski accident on a Rotorua lake in January this year says riders should wear helmets and life jackets when on the water.
An inquest into the death of Bishop Thompson was held on Wednesday.
The 17-year-old was thrown off the back of a jet ski and run over by another jet ski following closely behind on Lake Okareka on 8 January. His body was recovered four days later.
A post-mortem said he had drowned, but also revealed that he had a substantial injury to the back of his head.
Three of the four people on jet skis involved in the accident, including the victim, were not wearing life jackets.
At the inquest, Bishop's family and Detective Sergeant John Wilson suggested there could be a law for people on jet skis to wear life jackets and helmets.
Coroner Wallace Bain said he wanted the findings to be issued before Christmas to avoid another person being lost on the water.
