Nelson City Council is to seek a legal opinion after a claim it has breached laws by deciding to establish a Maori ward.
The council is under fire from some ratepayers who say they were not consulted on the move.
A Nelson lawyer has now told the council its decision has breached the Local Electoral Act and Local Government Act.
The council says it voted for a Maori ward following legal and other advice but will get an independent opinion.
