About 500 people were at the Cathedral of St Paul in Wellington on Sunday to mark Remembrance Day, for those who died in World War I.
The service was also to remember all men and women who have sacrificed their lives in world conflicts and those currently serving with the New Zealand Defence Force.
The service included a military flag parade and Defence Minister Wayne Mapp delivered the first reading.
A special tribute was paid to the four New Zealand serviceman killed in Afghanistan over the past year - Private Jack Howard, Private Kirifi Mila, Corporal Doug Grant and Lance Corporal Leon Smith.
Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Tony Parr says the loss of these men, brings Remembrance Day very close to home.
Afterwards, veterans met serving members of the Defence Force.
The armistice at 11am on 11 November, 1918, marked the moment when hostilities ceased on the western front.
