Police are trying to identify a skeleton, possibly missing its skull, found in an adandoned Auckland house.

The skeleton was encased in earth and dumped on the garage floor of a house in Barrack Rd, Mt Wellington, which was being demolished to make way for underground power cables.

Alliance Demolition part owner Andrew Davy says he orignially thought the remains could be historical or animal bones, but called the police. He saw many bones such as ribs but no sign of a skull.

Police say the bones were those of a male between 157cm and 164cm tall.
