A man drowned in Kaikoura after falling off a wharf on Wednesday night.
Two men were fishing off the wharf when one fell into the water just after 11pm.
He was able to hold onto the wharf for support for a short time, but then disappeared from sight.
His companion was unable to help him and ran to raise the alarm.
The man's body was located an hour later 100 metres from the wharf.
