Speed cameras not affected by surveillance ruling

Police say a Supreme Court Ruling on the use of hidden cameras does not affect their use of speed cameras.

The court found the use by police of hidden cameras to gather evidence in the Urewera raids case was illegal. It led to charges being dropped against 13 of the 17 people arrested.

Prime Minister John Key has stated the ruling could also compromise about 40 court cases and 50 current investigations.

The Government is now rushing through a Video Camera Surveillance Bill to make covert surveillance legal.

Police say speed cameras are not affected by current legislation as they are in public places where the public cannot reasonably be expected to be afforded privacy and they're concerned with collecting vehicle images only.
