A measles outbreak in Auckland continues to grow, with the number of confirmed cases rising to 187 since the end of May.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service said on Thursday that 27 people have now been hospitalised with the illness and 17 remain in quarantine.

It says children in the infectious stage of the disease have attended 35 early childhood centres and schools.

Those centres and schools are asked to send letters to parents, warning them to keep susceptible children home from school.
