Environment Minister Nick Smith is hoping that thousands of people will take part in television recycling programme launched on Wednesday.
Dr Smith says that over the next four years more than half a million televisions containing lead will be added to the country's landfill, as people upgrade to digital sets.
He is urging people to instead drop their old sets at The Warehouse stores across the country for free for the next two weeks, and the Government will pay for the parts to be recycled.
About 96% of the parts in old televisions can be recycled, at a cost of about $10 - $15 per set.
