Prime Minister John Key has ruled out using signs to warn drivers they are approaching a speed camera.
The Automobile Association is calling for sign posting following the release of figures showing speed camera tickets nearly doubled in 2010, to 627,000.
It says the current regime is not slowing drivers and is against international best practice.
But Mr Key disagrees, saying the speed cameras do save lives and slow down drivers. He says putting signs up would likely defeat the purpose of having them.
Mr Key says if drivers don't want a ticket, then they need to consistently slow down.
