AA disappointed at speed camera stance

2:30 pm on 16 September 2011

The Automobile Association says the Government's decision to rule out signs warning drivers they are approaching a speed camera is short-sighted.

Police Minister Judith Collins dismissed signposting on Thursday when discussing why speed camera tickets nearly doubled last year.

She says signs only make drivers slow down for a while before speeding up again.

The AA says the Government's decision flies in the face of the current road safety strategy, which is known as the safe system.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce says one thing the Government could do is introduce demerit points for speed camera fines.
