Opponents of a controversial motorway project on the Kapiti Coast say it is looming large as an election issue.
The Government plans to spend up to $850 million building two sections of four-lane motorway through Kapiti as part of its Wellington - Levin road of national significance.
Prior to the routes being announced in 2009, Otaki MP and Associate Transport Minister Nathan Guy supported a plan to build a two-lane road that would divert local traffic.
A spokesperson for the Save Kapiti group, Jonathan Gradwell, says Mr Guy is guilty of an unforgivable flip flop which many people will remember at the election.
But the MP says a two-lane local road would only give the highway a breather for 10 to 12 years, and the expressway is the best long term option.
