Hutt Valley principal says lessons learned

The man in charge of a Lower Hutt high school when physical and sexual assaults occurred says he would now act differently in a similar situation.

Steve Chapman was the acting principal of Hutt Valley High School at the time of the assaults in 2007.

An Ombudsman's report into the serious assaults found there was a systemic problem of violence and the school failed to address it satisfactorily.

Current principal Ross Sinclair says Mr Chapman, who is now the deputy principal, has said he has learnt from the incidents.

Mr Sinclair said on Thursday the board may discuss at a meeting in a few days' time Mr Chapman's employment as part of the implications of the Ombudsman's report.

"The board is an employer, so one of its functions is to consider employment matter. But I don't want to be seen as I have been apparently today to be suggesting that that is the thrust of their thinking."

Mr Sinclair says the report identifies problems with systems, not people.

Post-Primary Teachers Association president Robin Duff says he would be disappointed if Mr Chapman is made a scapegoat when the Government's failure to address bullying is equally to blame.
