More than 50 Northland students will be able to gain NCEA credits while getting practical training in possum trapping, fur and pelt recovery.
Northland Regional Council, Enviroschools Northland and the Department of Conservation have teamed up with a private trainer to offer the 'Project Possum' course, which is thought to be a first for the country.
Regional council co-ordinator Susan Karels says that as well as offering students the chance to earn level two and three credits, the aim is to create job prospects for young Northlanders and help to control a pest that is having a significant impact on the region's environment.
Senior secondary pupils taking the course will learn about the biology of possums, and trapping and processing techniques in a series of workshops starting on Thursday.
Ms Karels says Enviroschools Northland is also planning a pilot programme setting up a small business with a group of students to trap possums and sell their fur and skins.
