Complaint against newspaper upheld

The New Zealand Herald has been censured for relying on Twitter in a story about broadcaster Martin Devlin.

The Press Council has partly upheld a complaint against the newspaper for a front-page story it published about Mr Devlin in May.

The story described how Mr Devlin was removed from a plane after an onboard fracas.

It referred to multiple witnesses, who said he became abusive towards passengers and an air hostess.

Mr Devlin complained, saying only one witness was spoken to directly.

The other report came from a message on Twitter, which could not be verified and was deleted a short time after it was posted.

The Press Council did not uphold all aspects of Mr Devlin's complaint, but its members agreed the Herald's coverage was unfair.
