High density housing, social focus in Auckland plan

4:59 pm on 25 August 2011

A development blueprint for Auckland proposes more high density housing and a major focus on improving the lot of the most deprived communities.

The plan covers 30 years in which Auckland's population will grow by about 1 million.

It proposes retaining an urban limit, accommodating growth in higher density housing.

By 2041, it envisages a 10-fold increase in apartment dwelling.

It wants co-ordination with central government improved housing, health and education among the 30% of Aucklanders it says live in communities of high deprivation.

Economic strategies are aimed at boosting growth in productivity and exports.

The plan goes out for consultation until November.
