The second of five hearings into cycling-related road deaths has taken place at the High Court in Hamilton.
Three cyclists were killed when hit by a car while travelling on a road near Morrinsville in November last year.
Waikato Coroner Gordon Matenga is looking into the deaths to identify any common trends in a bid to prevent similar tragedies.
Mr Matenga on Thursday heard from three members of the cycling group involved in the crash, as well as a police officer who investigated.
He asked the witnesses whether they had any thoughts on improving conditions for cyclists on the road. One said he believed cyclists need to take more responsibility for themselves.
The inquest also heard from a teenager whose mother, Kay Wolfe, was killed in the accident. Gavin Wolfe said he has given up road cycling because he believed it is too dangerous.
He said he no longer felt the same enjoyment when he cycled after the crash and it is very difficult to be safe on a bike while on the road.
Further hearings are to be held in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
