A maritime fisheries lawyer is calling for a commission of inquiry into the fishing industry following accusations of physical, mental and sexual abuse aboard some foreign-charter vessels.
A report by Auckland University researchers which is due to be issued on Thursday, details the allegations from the Indonesian crew of the South Korean boat Oyang 75.
They tell of beatings and sexual abuse by officers, and crew members working 40-hour shifts until they beg for a break.
The report also includes witness accounts from other foreign-charter vessels.
Maritime lawyer Peter Dawson says the allegations prove a ministerial inquiry is not enough and a Commission of Inquiry should be held.
