More than 61,000 trucks have been ordered off the roads in recent years for safety reasons.
Figures released to Radio New Zealand also show police have caught thousands of drivers breaching weight limits and logbook rules.
In the past five years, police issued more than 61,000 out-of-service orders to trucks because of safety issues and other offences.
In the same period, nearly 11,000 logbook offences and 16,000 cases of trucks exceeding the allowed weight limits were recorded.
The Automobile Association says the trucking industry is committing too many offences.
It says the figures are probably just the tip of the iceberg, as the police can't and don't monitor every road.
