Decision on Defence land may be made soon

2:09 pm on 4 August 2011

A decision about what will happen to 76 hectares of Defence Force land in Wellington could be made soon.

The Defence Force wants to sell the property at Watts Peninsula in Miramar and is working through the disposal process with the Department of Conservation (DoC).

Film director Sir Peter Jackson, who has studios nearby, has had lawyers contact the Defence Force to ask about the process.

Defence Force director of housing and property Peter Bollmann says matters to do with heritage are being worked through.

He says there is no intention by DoC to have the land turned into residential housing- as suggested in one report, and it would rather turn it into a reserve. Mr Bollmann says a decision could be made soon.
