Defence Minister Wayne Mapp insists New Zealand has an effective Defence Force, able to meet the country's needs.
The Defence Force is having to tackle several recent issues, including investigating two senior officers, in the Navy and Army, in relation to alcohol.
It has also admitted security flaws at its Kauri Point ammunition store in Auckland from which ammunition, flares and cartridges were taken at the weekend.
Dr Mapp told Morning Report that steps have been taken regarding these incidents, and says many of them are unrelated to each other.
He says the deployments the Defence Force undertakes, in Afghanistan, Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands, is testament to its capabilities.
