A kayaker was rescued late on Monday after his craft sank 1.5km off Matata in the Bay of Plenty.
He had been paddled out to retrieve a fishing device.
Police say two volunteer fire fighters paddled a dinghy out from the beach and supported him until the Coastguard arrived from Whakatane.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment for mild hyperthermia and has since been discharged.
