Axe murderer drops bid for royal pardon

Convicted murderer John Ericson appears to have dropped his bid for a royal pardon.

Ericson is serving a life sentence for killing wife Sandra Ericson with a hatchet in Blenheim in 1999.

Last year he told the Parole Board he had applied to the Governor-General to exercise his powers of royal pardon on behalf of the Queen but at a recent hearing reversed that position.

Ericson told the board he will not take any further legal steps regarding his conviction and sentence.

He says he may have caused the death of his wife but that he is not a murderer, nor a violent person.

Ericson has not undertaken any programmes in jail to deal with his offending.
