The controversial fine for Auckland motorists who drive in bus lanes could be slashed by the council-controlled Auckland Transport.
A report commissioned by the organisation has suggested the $150 fine should be more in line with similar traffic infringements.
Auckland Transport spokesperson Sharon Hunter says the same amount is imposed on people who run red lights - an act that could kill people - and compared to that the bus lane fine seems quite high.
The amount of the fine was set by the New Zealand Transport Agency.
Auckland Transport says it is looking at waiving the fines for first time offenders, says other options are being looked at, including axing the fee altogether.
