5:36 am on 19 July 2011

A man is dead after a police pursuit in South Auckland.

Police say the man died in a crash at the intersection of Patumahoe and Waiuku Roads in Pukekohe at 3pm on Monday.

They say the dead man was travelling in a stolen car and had been fleeing from officers.

Police say they started chasing the stolen silver Nissan, south of Pukekohe, near Tuakau Road but abandoned the pursuit about two minutes later.

About 30 seconds after the pursuit was abandoned, the fleeing vehicle collided with another car after going through a stop sign.

Police say the woman driver of the other car is shaken but fortunately unharmed.

South Counties Manukau Area Commander, Inspector Gary Hill, says the vehicle was travelling at well over 100 kilometres a hour and police launched a short pursuit, but stopped after less than two minutes.

Police are following up a report of a second person fleeing the stolen vehicle on foot after the crash.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
