Police are investigating the circumstances behind a dive trip on Auckland's North Shore that has left one man dead and another person missing.
Eight divers went into Lake Pupuke near Takapuna this afternoon but only six returned to the surface, one of them with minor injuries.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Batty says the police are investigating what went wrong on the dive, which involved three instructors and five students.
He says police have been working with witnesses and members of dive group to find out why they were at the lake.
He refused to speculate on the purpose of the dive and said that, and the duration of the dive were still the subject of inquiry.
Detective Senior Sergeant Batty says the divers entered Lake Pupuke off a jetty which extends about 10 metres into the southern end of the lake.
One of the divers who emerged from the water was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The search for the missing diver has been suspended overnight and will resume at first light on Saturday.
