Former Hauraki mayor Basil Morrison has been appointed to chair the Local Government Commission.
The commission decides the structure and boundaries of councils and their governance arrangements.
Local Government Minister Rodney Hide says Mr Morrison's extensive knowledge of local government matters will be of great benefit to the commission.
Mr Morrison chaired Local Government New Zealand from 2005 to 2009.
