Student station goes off air in protest

A student radio station in Dunedin has taken itself off air for a week in protest at the station's possible sale.

The action is also being taken in protest against the possible introduction of voluntary membership for student associations.

Radio One is owned by the Otago University Students Association, which says the sale is being considered as a cost-cutting measure.

Association president Logan Somers-Edgar says it could lose 90% of its income if a bill making membership of tertiary student associations voluntary is passed by Parliament.

If that happens, he says, students are going to have to tighten their belts and "give up a lot of their luxuries".

Radio One's manager, Sean Norling, says he hopes the week off air will prompt supporters to lobby the association not to sell the station. "I don't think they realise what a cultural icon they actually sit on," he says.
