Jobs lost as clean heat project wound up

Twelve Canterbury regional council employees have lost their jobs with the winding up of the organisation's clean heat project.

The project aimed to reduce air pollution through alternative heating methods.

A council spokesperson says seven staff lost their jobs at the end of last year, while another five were made redundant on Thursday.

Only one person has been offered a new role at the council.

The multimillion-dollar project has replaced 20,000 log-burners with cleaner heating options over the past 10 years throughout Canterbury.

The project was canned by commissioners appointed to run the council when the Government sacked elected representatives last year.

The commissioners said the project was redundant because the Government had introduced nationwide clean-heat and insulation programmes.
