Retailers told to take Kronic brand off shelves

The Ministry of Health is warning retailers to remove a synthetic cannabis product from their shelves because it contains a prescription medicine.

Kronic Pineapple Express, a herbal smoking product, contains phenazepam which is not available in New Zealand and is used to treat anxiety and convulsions.

The ministry believes the sale of Kronic Pineapple Express is against the law because it contains a medicine that is being distributed without consent.

It met with the company importing and manufacturing the product on Thursday and has requested it be recalled from retailers immediately.

Director-General of Health Kevin Woods says people should seek medical advice if they are feeling unwell after using the product.

The company marketing Kronic Pineapple Express says it will comply with the ban. Lightyears Ahead Ltd says the product was not intended to contain the drug and it was unaware that it did.

Western Australia has banned all Kronic products.
