Defending men's champion Rafael Nadal, of Spain, advanced to the third round in London with a straight sets win over American Ryan Sweeting, 6-3 6-2 6-4.
Andy Murray, who is bidding to become the first British men's singles champion at Wimbledon for 75 years, had a routine 6-3 6-3 7-5 win over German Tobias Kamke.
But it wasn't nearly so easy for five-time women's champion Venus Williams.
The American had to struggle back from 5-1 down in the first set to beat 40-year-old Japanese Kimiko Date-Krumm in three sets 6-7(6) 6-3 8-6.
