Marriage rate way down on 40 years ago

New Zealand's marriage rate is continuing to fall and is now less than a third of what it was at its peak, 40 years ago.

Statistics New Zealand says there were 12.5 marriages per 1000 unmarried adults last year, down from 13.6 the previous year.

The rate in 1971 was 45.5.

Statistics New Zealand says more de facto unions, a trend towards delaying getting married and more people staying single have all contributed to the fall in the marriage rate.

It estimates that 35% of the couples who married in 1971 had divorced by 2010.
