Another large measles outbreak in Auckland

Health authorities have confirmed 17 cases of measles in what is the second largest outbreak in Auckland this year.

All cases are linked to Oratia Primary School in west Auckland, with quarantine periods required for children not immunised since the outbreak began two weeks ago.

Similar exclusions have also been in place at Epsom Girls Grammar, where a student was exposed to the disease, as well as a Plunket playgroup.

The Medical Officer of Health for the Auckland Regional Health Service says measles is a serious and highly contagious disease and three of the 17 people have been hospitalised.

Dr Richard Hoskins says the service is working to trace people who may have been exposed to people while they were infectious.

More than 200 people including large groups such as schools have been traced so far.
