Qantas and Jetstar flights set to resume

9:48 pm on 14 June 2011

Qantas flights to and from New Zealand have been cancelled until Wednesday afternoon but will resume flying in most parts of Australia.

Qantas and its budget offshoot Jetstar have cancelled dozens of flights since the weekend due to ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Chile.

The Australian carrier says all flights in and out of Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne will operate on Wednesday, but there will be no services to or from New Zealand until at least 2pm.

Qantas says it will continue to review the situation. It and Jetstar have waived their usual refund fee and will allow flight changes free of charge.

Air New Zealand's domestic and trans-Tasman flights are continuing to operate as normal.

The airline says it sees no reason to stop flying when there are safe flight paths below the ash.

The cloud of ash is sitting at about 27,000 feet on Tuesday.

Australia's Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre earlier said that flights in Australia and across the Tasman could be affected for a few days.

New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority meteorological manager Peter Lechner expects the disruption to continue for up to a week.
