Tainted Taiwanese food recalled

New Zealand retailers are recalling some fruit juices made in Taiwan after they were found to be contaminated with a hazardous chemical.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries says Taiwanese authorities have discovered a chemical called DEHP in some drinks, food supplements and powders.

The chemical is usually used in plastics.

New Zealand retailers have already withdrawn two kinds of fruit drink from sale.

The ministry says the chemical is not immediately dangerous but can cause reproductive problems and increase risks of cancer after prolonged exposure.

The two withdrawn products are Sunkist brand Lemon Juice with Aloe Vera Pulp and Guava Drink.
