Unscheduled landing for Air New Zealand flight

7:07 am on 10 June 2011

Air New Zealand says one of its Boeing 767-300 aircraft had to abort its flight from Auckland to Perth when it had problems with one engine.

The aircraft, carrying 206 passengers, had only just taken off when the crew reported an issue with its left engine.

It was able to land about 30 minutes later.

The airline says the problem could have been bird strike but an engine inspection is being made to find out the cause.

There were some reports of flames being seen from the damaged engine, but Air New Zealand says that is not unusual when an engine is shut off in flight.
