An aid worker from Hawke's Bay has been awarded one of the world's highest nursing honours, the Florence Nightingale medal.

Andrew Cameron was nominated for his contribution to the New Zealand Red Cross, which he joined in 1996.

The organisation's international operations manager, Andrew McKie, says Mr Cameron has been involved in missions in Kenya, Sudan and Afghanistan.

Just 50 Florence Nightingale medals are awarded around the world every two years.

Mr Cameron will be presented his medal later in the year, when he returns from a posting to South Ossetia.
