7:04 am on 6 June 2011

Police in Hastings are seeking help from the public to apprehend a group of people who assaulted a family in the city on Saturday night.

The vehicle the family were travelling in had an object thrown at it.

The male driver, 51, stopped the vehicle and got out and was assaulted by five to six offenders.

His two female passengers, aged 48 and 26, were also assaulted, as was a man from a neighbouring property who went to their aid.

The incident happened just after 10pm on Nelson Street North.

The driver has been treated for facial fractures at Hastings hospital.

Police say it was a completely unprovoked attack.
