Overnight work at site of fatal explosion

8:13 am on 5 June 2011

Emergency services worked all Saturday night to make the site of a fatal gas blast in Onehunga safe again.

A woman was killed and six others were injured in the explosion in a tunnel being used for work on city water mains.

Police say fire crews have been pumping air into the tunnel in a bid to make it safe. The levels will be tested on Sunday morning.

The Fire Service says it is yet to determine what gas was responsible for the blast.

It is not toxic, but gas supply has been turned off to houses near the site as a precaution.

Auckland hospital says one of the men severely injured in the explosion has a long road to recovery.

He remains in a critical but stable condition in intensive care.

Condolences expressed by mayor

Mayor Len Brown has expressed sympathy for the family of the woman killed in the explosion.

On behalf of the people of Auckland, Mr Brown has also offered condolences to the families of the injured men.

He says they were either employed by or contracted to Watercare Services.
