Floodwaters damage bridges in Far North

2:32 pm on 29 April 2011

Two bridges in the Far North have been damaged by flooding but SH1 reopened on Friday after road crews carried out repairs.

Motorists were able to the small one-way bridge north of Te Kao, with care, after contractors reinforced the approaches the Transport Agency says.

The Mitimiti Bridge, about 60km north of Awanui, was closed on Friday for similar reinforcement work.

Detours were in place and four wheel drive vehicles could ford the stream.

The bridge was expected to reopen on Friday afternoon.

Phones were still out in parts of the Far North after heavy rain and flooding damaged cables overnight on Thursday.
