Number of industrial disputes fall

New figures show the level of industrial action last year was the lowest since records began more than two decades ago.

In 2010, there were 11 strikes, five partial strikes and one lock-out, Statistics New Zealand figures show.

The total of 17 was down from the previous year's 31 disputes.

The industrial action in 2010 involved more than 6000 workers, costing employers about $1.1 million in wages and salaries, compared to about 9000 workers and about $2.4 million in 2009.

Government statistician Geoff Bascand says only three of the 17 disputes last year were left unresolved - the best result since 2003.

Mr Bascand says the two industries most affected by strikes were manufacturing, and health care and social assistance.
