Vets at Wellington Zoo are caring for a sick kakapo chick thought to be critical for the survival of the species.

The chick has a unique combination of genes originating from Fiordland and Stewart Island Kakapo.

Veterinarian Lisa Argilla, says it was having breathing problems and was flown from its home on Codfish Island to the zoo for urgent treatment.

There are only about 130 kakapo left, living on island sanctuaries around New Zealand.
