10:17 pm on 6 April 2011

The husband of former National Party president Judy Kirk has died in a hunting accident near Taupo.

Roger Kirk, 64, a building contractor, was found dead on a property on the outskirts of Taupo by a neighbour.

Police say initial inquiries suggest that Mr Kirk accidentally shot himself, possibly after falling, some time before 11am on Wednesday.

Prime Minister John Key expressed sadness at the news, saying he knew Mr Kirk well and considered him a friend.

Mr Key says he is shocked at the tragic and sudden death and has conveyed his deepest condolences to Mr Kirk's family, friends and colleagues.

The death has been referred to the coroner.
