Receiver takes over control of Pike River mine

Pike Rive Coal's receiver has taken over control of the mine from police.

Police announced almost two months ago that they were ending their operation to recover the remains of the 29 men who died in November's explosions at the mine.

But they have remained in control because of contractual difficulties with receiver PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Police say the receiver will continue with the mine stabilisation operation already under way, and they expect to be called back if the mine becomes safe to re-enter.

Police welfare support for the miners' families will continue.
